Marine pilots determine the safest route for the captain to bring a vessel to its port of call.

A marine pilot is a trusted guide who uses their knowledge of local waters to direct a vessel and navigate it through BC’s ports and waterways using the safest route. This route can change daily depending on factors like other marine traffic, winds and tides.
Although the Captain of the ship is very familiar with their own vessel and crew, they may not necessarily be familiar with the specifics of each port where their vessel must go. BC Coast Pilots live, work and play along the BC coast, and have a lifetime of experience in how tides, geography and weather patterns affect the way ships move in and out of BC’s harbours. We apply this through, local expertise to make sure that the ship, its crew, passengers and cargo arrive smoothly at their next port of call.

International Marine Pilots

There are marine pilots around the world following a similar process as the BC Coast Pilots to protect coastlines and sensitive marine environments. While each country has different regulations for pilotage services, pilots from over 40 countries meet bi-annually to share their expertise and knowledge to improve maritime security.

Compulsory Pilotage Area

Pilots are required on board foreign vessels over 350 gross tonnes (the size of a large yacht) or a Canadian vessel of over 10,000 tonnes (the size of BC Ferries) whenever they are in the red or green shaded areas shown on the chart. The red areas are the responsibility of the BC Coast Pilots while the green area is managed by the Fraser River pilots. Pilots service a wide variety of ships including container ships, car ships, cruise ships, bulk carriers, tankers, and breakbulk ships everywhere on the coast.

Marine Traffic Coordination

While marine pilots have been working to protect the coast and inland waters since the mid-1800s, the current company, BC Coast Pilots, formally formed in 1973. The BC Coast Pilots have nearly five decades of an exceptional safety record managing marine traffic in BC coastal and inland waters. We coordinate with other marine traffic in the area to make sure all passing, overtaking or transiting in confined areas is done in the safest possible manner.

Pilot Information

Pilots incorporate information from multiple sources including the Marine Communications and Traffic Services, shipboard equipment, and our own electronic positioning systems to communicate the best route for ships— fishing vessels, ferries, tugboats, government ships and pleasure craft— to safely share and navigate BC’s waters.
