Executive Summary

The BC Coast Pilots is making our workplace better for everyone. Our plan says how we will find and fix barriers in our workplace and recruitment processes. We want to provide equitable and functional access to employment opportunities and our company programs and policies for all people. Our office is not open to the general public.

General Accessibility Statement

The BC Coast Pilots believes that everyone should feel welcome in our workplace. We will listen, learn, and makes changes so that everyone can work and do their best.

Our Action Plan

Employment

  • Review job ads, hiring forms, and interview process to identify and remove barriers.
  • Provide equitable access to accommodation requests for candidate and employees.
  • Make sure our hiring and promotion processes are equitable and consistent.

Built Environment

  • Check our workplace for physical barriers.
  • Makes changes when needed to reduce or eliminate barriers which could create a health and safety risk.
  • Keep walkways clear, lights working well, and mange acoustics.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)

  • Align our website with Level AA set out in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
  • Share information in plain language.
  • Make digital tools functionally accessible.

Communication (non-ICT)

  • Use clear and direct language in emails, signs, and documents.
  • Provide large print or other formats when needed.
  • Ask employees how they prefer to get information.

Procurement or Goods, Services, and Facilities

  • Choose products and services that support accessibility.
  • Ask vendors if their tools and services provide equitable and functional access for everyone.

Design and Delivery of Programs and Services

  • Include employees in program and service design.
  • Ask for feedback to learn how to improve our employee programs.
  • Adopt a continuous improvement philosophy.

Transportation

  • Provide a hybrid work environment and equitable access to flexible workplace arrangement requests under the Canada Labour Code.
  • Review transportation expense policy.

Consultation

We will formally conduct and record consultation with candidates and employees to learn what barriers they face and what would overcome the barriers. We will keep asking and learning.

  • Proactively ask candidate and employees about barriers.
  • Provide a means of providing unsolicited feedback:

    • By talking with the Manager, Workplace and Human Resources
  • We will:
    • Say we got your message within five (5) business days
    • Review your feedback and reply within 30 business days
    • Keep feedback private and confidential
    • Use feedback to help improve our workplace
